Form V Function

When I bought this modern DVD shelf to store my DVD’s, Games and CD’s from Argos I thought I intended to use is for what it is designed for.

However as with all Argos items it failed miserably. It was supposedly designed for a maximum height of a DVD case but when you placed it together the holes were different to the design shown and far fewer shelves were supplied.

When you think of the average room, most of them have skirting boards around them, and when the piece of furniture was together it tilted forward, Argos rectified this by supplying brackets which had been given to them by the manufacturer. However how the back is the base hangs out the back creating a ledge. When the bracket is fitted it doesn’t fit close enough to the wall.

The product itself aesthetically it generally ok, however, there are several disappointing features which makes it impractical to use, mainly the fact that any DVD will not stay on the shelf without falling within 5 minutes. This would have been caused by the bad design and could be rectified by providing bigger brackets. Although, would be more visible.

As well as this, it is manufactured using chipboard and then finished with a laminated sheet, as they are mass produced the laminated finish isn’t cut properly so when you are close you can see the chipboard underneath. This would have been caused by not enough quality control in the factory. This would be rectified by placing this peace of furniture so the piece that is not laminated is not visible.
